This antique hardcover book is bound in light purple cloth boards, with gilt spine lettering and a gilt cover decoration of a spider in a web. Spine is faded to tan; spine ends bumped, some cover wear. Owner's name on second endpaper, pages slightly browned, but overall a clean copy. Illustrated with small engravings throughout, this book (which was published anonymously) explores the "reasons why" behind the variety of the animal kingdom, including animal behavior, physiology and even animal names. 356 pages; approx. 5"x8".
